A stunning expressionist allegory where "L'Idée" is represented by a naked woman, found everywhere men are persecuted and yet dare to hope. The dramatic lighting and forms evoke the vision of masters Murnau and Lang, accompanied superbly by a score by Arthur Honegger featuring a very haunting Ondes Martenot.

1 9 3 2 ! ! ! And yet, Barosch creates a strange, expressionistic world of images that are still striking today (in fact, one wonders what Paris audiences must have thought of this film back in the 30's). This version of the film creates a bittersweet paradox: it really deserves some sort of restoration (if possible), yet the blurred, faded quality of the film accentuates the haunting nature of the visuals. "L'idee" is a must for true fans of animation
