In this poetic and atmospheric horror fable, set in a village in war-torn medieval Japan, a malevolent spirit has been ripping out the throats of itinerant samurai. When a military hero is sent to dispatch the unseen force, he finds that he must struggle with his own personal demons as well. From Kaneto Shindo, director of the terror classic Onibaba, KURONEKO is a spectacularly eerie twilight tale with a shocking feminist angle, evoked through ghostly special effects and exquisite cinematography.

This is a beautiful and haunting ghost story. When a woman and young lady are raped and murdered by Samurai they come back as ghosts, vowing to avenge their deaths by eliminating their brutal murderers and all their kind. The story takes an interesting turn when they meet a Samurai in the woods one night who is quite familiar to them both. The sets in the film are seem somewhat simple but the effect of the lighting, cinematography etc. make this a very dreamy film indeed. Well worth a watch!

4 ½ Raped and murdered by marauding samurai in civil war-torn feudal Japan, a young woman and her mother-in-law make a deal with the gods of hate to drink the blood of all samurai on the earth. The indiscriminate pact leads to tragedy in this hauntingly beautiful ghost revenge tale that’s also a romance and an anti-war film. Many powerful scenes of visual storytelling, such as the pack drinking water like dogs before quenching other thirsts, and the mother-in-law gracefully dancing as her daughter-in-law seduces and kills men. A great, many-layered ghost story.

Beautiful and dumb. The rash of Japanese ghost movies in the 50's & 60's produced some great (Yotsuya Kaidan; Rasho-mon; Ugetsu Monogatari; e.g.) ones. This is NOT one of them.

Not bad at all. Neat little ghost story involving samurai, and the feudal japan era. The black and white really works in favor of the overall scheme. Worth watching.

stunning cinematography in this 'it's complicated' kabuki style ghost story. meow

This was an excellent movie. Liked it very much.
