5 stars. First of all the story is marvelous, makes you think and well done. The cinematography is absolutely amazing, you could take hundreds of individual frames of this film and print them as alluring photographs. This is a prime example of how analog film should be maintained as beautiful organic art. Sweet pretty music.

I wonder how many women would endure what Elisa does in this film. Her conviction and love must have been as strong as was Gilles opposite and clueless nature. No clever dialogue here, only a streaming series of gossamer vingnettes of place and time.Outstanding lighting and cinematography play on Emmanuelle Devos' expressive face and trace the inevitable progress of this story. A fine and unobtrusive score underlines the subtle impact of this art piece.
Sensuous, with jarring moments, a good score, and beautiful French actresses. What more could one want.
Thought provoking, but very bizarre! Surprising ending!
Meticulous photography, detailed set design and art direction. A period piece set in 1930’s France starring Emmanuelle Devos playing a wife waiting for an end of her husband’s lovesickness over her sister. Director Fonteyne takes us through a year marked by changing seasons and growth of a newborn baby. The entire film is Devos. We studying her in longsuffering silence putting up with Gilles’ teenage-like angst most often demonstrated in fits of jealous rage or brokenhearted gloom. Perfect acting and beautiful to watch in this unusual story with not much dialogue but lots to study.
It makes to think about life.
What a beautiful film, but oh so sad. The acting is masterful. They will break your hearts. The setting is lovely. This is French cinema at its finest. Indeed this is why we are so captivated by the French films. Breathe it in.
Gilles Wife...wow, what a "real" film. The actors were well cast in their roles, as are we viewers in the rolls we play in our lives. The story was well written and very "real" as it director let the viewers look inside the quiet, mounting desperation of the wife. As we all know, love can take us a long way, allowing us to tolerate, even understand surreal degrees of betrayal, Gilles Wife is a film portraying one such story with remarkable poignancy and grace.
a great character study
A good story...
I really enjoyed this film. Beautiful cinematography and acting by Ms. Devos. She doesn't speak much but her inner world is displayed by her expressions in her eyes. Strange ending though.
Stunning. Beautifully filmed. Colours and music and camera angles set a tone that is, yes, indeed, haunting. An odd film that is fascinating.
