Getting Home2007

  • 4.2
In this soulful and humane comedy, Zhao, a middle-aged construction worker, struggles to fulfill a dying co-worker's last wish to be buried in China's Three Gorges region. Setting out with his colleague's body in tow, Zhao travels hundreds of miles across extraordinary countryside, encountering a number of colorful adventures and characters and even discovering love in some unlikely quarters. Director Zhang Yang's humorous and moving tale of friendship offers a powerful (and sometimes slapstick) commentary on the value of community and human connectivity in modern China.

Everything in life is so transient, but Zhao takes on a task and a journey in the name of friendship -- His wit and loyalty teach us how to withstand the burdens ahead. There are scenes that will make you laugh and cry, and there's hardly a dull moment in this awesome, elevating film -- uplifting in spite of the bittersweet tears.

An entertaining comedy with a variety of somewhat quixotic events, but all designed to underpin

the values of reality, with those of truth, loyalty, generosity, endurance, and motherland

underscored. This is my third Chinese Produced, and Directed film and all leave me with the

vague sense of Propaganda films, in a Social Realism context. Each film conveys a very endearing

feeling about China; its people, even its security forces seem pleasantly almost gentle, and

helpful. I don't know. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the film(s), and all have increased my interest in

visiting China. Mostly to engage its' people within the context of their everyday lives in China.

Okay my new favorite.

Not perfect, but on the list of road movies to watch. Some comedy, some anxiety, patient pacing.

beautiful cinematography, but I swear I saw the dead guy blink.

An unusual road movie. A fine performance by Benshan Zhao, but the not quite believable premise (carrying around a dead body in warm weather) made some scenes an annoyance.

What a beautiful film. Showcases the most noble aspects of friendship, commitment, and humanity.
