This all-time Japanese cult favorite inspired a series of sequels and remakes still extending today. It's a crazed mixture of "women in prison" and revenge-flick tropes that was a key inspiration for KILL BILL (which used some of its music as an homage). Gorgeous Meiko Kaji plays the girlfriend of an ambitious police detective who uses her to infiltrate a yakuza gang. Raped, beaten and betrayed for her trouble, Nami is then thrown into a prison hellhole where the bad convicts torment the good ones and the corrupt wardens torment them all. But our heroine isn't as fragile as she seems. Indeed, she soon turns into a stone-cold avenger capable of orchestrating serious "accidents" for her foes and a full-on prison riot. En route to bustin' out, we get a full load of women-in-prison staples: "lesbian" action, sadism, catfights, shower scenes, every imaginable crisis and abuse staged in the most stylish, luridly colored widescreen fashion by director Shunya Ito in his debut feature. It's a hurtling train he sometimes lets jump rails with scenes that abruptly depart even this toehold on realism for full-on, giddy surrealism. - Dennis Harvey

PINKY VIOLENCE! LETS RIOT!!

Safety tips I learned from watching Female Prisoner 701: Scorpion:

Make sure torture victims are properly secured before transporting scalding liquids. Don't run with broken glass while possessed. Always ensure proper sloping when digging meaningless torture pits to avoid baking soda sickness. Beware of sharp shovels & utilize proper PPE. Never store flammable materials under Human Piñatas. Observe proper kissing etiquette. Avoid wronged Exes (especially if their prison # is 701...)

Loved it...sets the stage for all WIP movies to come...evokes a palpable scent of rage at the inhumane treatment suffered by the protagonist...you wind up rooting for her. More than gratuitous nudity so often associated with WIP flicks, the nudity here is definitely secondary to a strong story, which should always be the primary motive of any filmmaker.

Slimy, sleazy, stylistic, and over the top...everything you expect from Japanese cult cinema. The camera lingers lovingly on the tortures perpetrated on the women prisoners by guards and fellow prisoners alike. The end is maybe a bit abrupt (maybe the vengeance scenes could have taken up more of the movie?), but the odd use of lighting adds a touch of the Bava-esque to the proceedings. The uses of on-location shots and studio sets (sometimes in the same scene!) makes for a deliriously schizophrenic viewing experience...kinda like watching Hausu.

Hard to love at times, and certainly the most misogynistic thing I've seen in a looong time. But --- it scratches that bad girls go to prison itch from childhood started by Pam Grier/Jack Hill, with thanks to early cable and the unsupervised TV in the basement. And of course, it's all men's fault, per usual. More stereotypes than shaking the stick you could beat Tarantino with (and somebody probably should). Not for the squeamish, or for someone's first foray into the genre; but was entertaining, visually everything that I wanted, and I was happy to see the Japanese exploitation counterpart . A good mix of fun and truly horrible.

This is a film that mirrors the adversity of it’s heroine. It claws its way out of the misogynistic confines of a Pinky Violence, women’s prison fantasy and transcends into a stylistic, memorable tale of retribution and empowerment.

Meiko Kaji generates an amazing, magnetic screen presence and creates one of the great badass characters of cinema: cool, laconic, speaking with actions and not words. That hat, the coat, and the shimmering blade! Kaji and director Shunya Ito go for the kill, and it's glorious!

The second film in the "Female Prisoner: Scorpion" series is a lot better and more plausible. If you just want a "turn your mind off and float downstream" kind of grindhouse experience, this will suffice, however. Female prisoners aren't allowed to have scissors, you know, and if one of them happened to stab the warden in the eye with a glass shard (which she would not be allowed to keep, BTW), she would be dead. Just sayin'.

This is quite a ride. "Japanese All-Girl Prison Revenge Exploitation Flick" doesn't really convey how outrageous, bloody, violent and gloriously over the top this movie is. Beware, however- the gorgeous photography, campy script, and fine performances are mixed in with graphic sexual violence and some hopefully-now-outdated scenes of serious woman hating. Among other things. I enjoyed this film, but I also feel dirty and somehow implicated by my enjoyment. And I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this.

Not bad, the kill bill influence is definitely there. If you like 70's revenge films, you will like this. Good stuff.

ridiculous but funny _2 1/2 _it think the girl is Nami Matsushima_she's really cool

I loved it! What's wrong with me?

Pretty whacky film. Lots of violence, nudity, and some swearing.

5 stars for the heroine

This could easily be dismissed as an exploitation flick, and rightly so, it does have all the trappings of one, but what takes it into a whole new arena is the Bava-esque lighting, the stylish comic book framed camera work and the solid acting of admittedly two dimensional characters that would normally have the actor clearly reading their lines from cue cards.

With the imminent release of the Arrow Video Female Prisoner Blu-Ray box set, seeing this has certainly made me hungry to see more of this series.

Revenge is sweet!!!

Surreal and perfect

A brutal slice of Japanese revenge that appeals to a more primitive mindset - I found myself cheering on Matsu the whole time as she tackled her way through hive-minded prisoners, asshole guards, and finished what she started before she landed herself in prison. Slightly unrealistic at times? Maybe - but that's part of the fun.

Strange but good, little hard to follow.

I like it
