Eyes Without a Face1960

At his secluded chateau in the French countryside, a brilliant, obsessive doctor attempts a radical plastic surgery to restore the beauty of his daughter's disfigured countenance (at a horrifying price). EYES WITHOUT A FACE, directed by the supremely talented Georges Franju, is rare in horror cinema for its odd mixture of the ghastly and the lyrical, and it has been a major influence on the genre in the decades since its release. There are images here (of terror, of gore, of inexplicable beauty) that once seen are never forgotten.

While Georges Franju is working within the "horror" genre, EYES WITHOUT A FACE far exceeds the boundaries. It is actually more of a Surrealist Fairy Tale. The film has a consistently dream-like quality that will haunt the viewer's mind long after watching it. Surprisingly graphic for a film from 1960, Edith Scob and her iconic mask still pack a punch. You almost want to follow her as she floats down the country path with newly freed birds. Exceptional film.

A diabolical ballet of shadow and moonlight. Little dialog is needed by Franju to take the classic horror tale of the Mad Scientist and his heinous experiments and transform it into a macabre fairy tale. Unsettling and unforgettable!

This was pretty good. A real ground breaker for what was to come in the horror genre. A must watch for any fan.

i mostly liked it even though i hated the "doc" _but some of the scenes just dragged on too long for me & i got impatient_but it's all shot well_ & his daughter looks like a living Barbie _cool

Stumbled upon this randomly on Fandor. Pretty terrific, and really impressive that something like this was released in 1960.
