In his mesmerizing debut feature, twenty-four-year-old director Louis Malle brought together the beauty of Jeanne Moreau, the camerawork of Henri Decae and a now legendary score by Miles Davis. A touchstone of the careers of both its star and director, ELEVATOR TO THE GALLOWS is a richly atmospheric thriller of murder and mistaken identity unfolding over one restless Parisian night.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who loves cinema would not fall madly in love with Louis Malle's directorial debut. Jeanne Moreau stars and filled with the music of Miles Davis, filmmaking just doesn't get any cooler. Welcome to La Nouvelle Vague -- let's get lost.

Wonderful! The black and white is virtually edible, Miles Davis's score and playing delicious, Jeanne Moreau's acting a triumph of not seeming to act at all, just being, and being beautiful. Creaks in a couple of places and the voice-over interior monologues are oddly out of place and date in such a smoothly polished movie.

Film noir. How funny that the best way to be original is not to try.

Jeanne Moreau is SO SEXY!!!!!!

Only one word is needed to review this film. "WOW." From the earthy sensuality of Jeanne Moreau to the Miles Davis jazz score this film hits all the high notes. And the gull-wing Mercedes sports car -- I would love to have that car today!

not sure this merits 4 stars but so close. Intricate, convincing plot (except how did that grappling iron end up on the ground? Nice touch having the kid find it tho). From start to finish this film looks stunning, the acting is quite good. Some of the dialogue over the top. Worth your time for sure. Perfect Miles Davis sound track adds immeasurably to the mood.

Classic Malle.
