The second collaboration between G.W. Pabst and Lousie Brooks is silent film melodrama at it’s best, a stunning look at Weimar decadence and Weimar hypocrisy.
Brooks has a timeless screen presence, transcending the decades and delivering a performance that resonates today. You almost expect her to jump off the screen and into the 21st Century. It leaves us to wonder what she and Pabst might have come up with had they done another movie.
