Before PSYCHO, PEEPING TOM, and REPULSION, there was DIABOLIQUE. This thriller from Henri‑Georges Clouzot, which shocked audiences in Europe and the U.S., is the story of two women (the fragile wife and the willful mistress of the sadistic headmaster of a boys' boarding school) who hatch a daring revenge plot. With its unprecedented narrative twists and terrifying images, DIABOLIQUE is a heart-grabbing benchmark in horror filmmaking, featuring outstanding performances by Simone Signoret, Véra Clouzot and Paul Meurisse.

Although I am not a big fan of older movies, nor of horror movies, I really liked this mystery. Although a little improbable (after the fact) it is a good watch. I remember working in the movie theatre when it came out in the late '50's; the audience was absolutely spellbound.

Sixty years later, and DIABOLIQUE is still creepy as hell! This is quite simply one of the all-time great movie thrillers, a cinematic Grand Guignol from one of a true master of suspense, Henri-Georges Clouzot.

This really is the best Hitchcock film Hitchcock never made. I'm serious. If I were doing a Hitchcock retrospective, I would include this. I am convinced that Clouzot made the perfect Hitchcock film as a way of sticking his tongue out at Hitchcock.

I must not tell you what happens in this film. It is diabolical!

Of course some aspects of this movie are a little outdated, but overall it holds up pretty well. What makes it so interesting is that you think you've figured it out and then there's a twist, right up to the end. In the final moments of the movie, a little boy says something that makes you think that there may be yet another explanation. A fun little mind game.

Combining the swagger of Signore with the docile Vera was outstanding. The ogre husband could have been played by several great actors of the time. Suspense build - A+, plot/conflict - A+, scenery - A++. The mere fact that the devilishness of the plan took place with an all boys school as backdrop was phenomenal. Timeless and contemporary at the same damn time. French and bou coup marvelous.

loved dit !!
