Devil Doll1964

  • 3.7
Grab a good seat and don't look away from the stage, for the Great Vorelli (Bryant Haliday) is about to dazzle London with his eerie mixture of hypnotism and ventriloquism. However, there may be something a little too lifelike about his dummy, Hugo, who has the ability to walk across the stage all by himself. Now Vorelli has become obsessed with Marianne (Yvonne Romain), an heiress who proves to be the key to the powerful mesmerist's insidious plans. Marianne's boyfriend, reporter Mark English (William Sylvester), suspects evil at work and becomes determined to uncover the secret between Vorelli and the wooden Hugo, a creature born from your darkest nightmares!

DEVIL DOLL is sick & pervy....in a good way. It's a bit like Twilight Zone meets Sexploitation - one has to negotiate both creepy ventriloquist dummy and his "master" a sleazy mesmerist who uses his powers to get women to undress, among other things. His stage act isn't fun for the whole family. It's a stylish, sharp, darkly comedic, truly strange, little gem of a flick. I wholeheartedly recommend the film for fans of classic horror and anyone else who is intrigued by the premise.

This definitely falls under the creepy category. Devil Doll is an enjoyable B movie. The story maintains an effective verisimilitude, even though, of course, the whole thing is preposterous. Within the movie's reality, Verilli is a malignant antagonist and Marianne is the classic heroine in the clutches of a grasping sadist. Hugo the lap-doll (and who isn't leery of them) is the avenging angel who puts his master in hell. Bob is admittedly the weakest character, but he serves well in stitching the various parts into a airly seamless show. If you like good entertainment, this is the one that will traumetize your kids for life

This whole film had a creepy feel...The doll was eerie and when Hugo walked onstage, the effect was stellar..the ending was a bit weak but other then that, good film for the genre...The original in 1932 was scarier, (with Lionel Atwill) but still, Devil Doll (1964) packs a punch.

Quite stupid if you analyze the plot which makes no sense. The classic living dummy tale with a predictable ending. Fun to watch, however, if you like your movie women sexy and voluptuous, your movie sex perverted but implied, and the creepy...creepy. Fun and recommended. Just don't think too deeply into the plot.

macabre, kinda good but subject to its times

I love the ending. Unexpected. This is the basis for movies like Chucky.

I could not give a 4 but a 3.5 stars seems right for this film unlike other movies with dolls in it like twilight zone this ending took me by surprise I thought it was great fun for those who like english horror this is worth taking in.

Funny stuff.

It is worthwhile to watch if only for the bizarre acting of the mesmerist and overall real life conversational style of the supporting cast, even if there is little explanation behind his mysterious powers other than an extended trip to the East.
