Daybreak2008

  • 2.8
A beautiful and poignant love story from acclaimed director Adolfo Alix Jr., starring festival favorite Coco Martin. DAYBREAK happens entirely in one place: a gorgeous modern house in the Filipino countryside and with only two characters. William and JP spend one night contemplating whether to break up or continue their relationship. The men reveal their biggest lies and the biggest truths. They love each other, cling to each other and betray each other, but will the dawn of a new day bring their intimacy to an end?

A bittersweet film. The house was the perfect setting. It reminded me of the room at the end of "2001 a Space Odessey". It had a sense of finality, that their feelings could not build on anything, as if they met on some space station flying through space. Their humanness was stark and vulnerable. The magnificent scenery was aloof and distant, indifferent to the frailty of human uncertainties, emotions, even passions. It said very clearly that this love could go nowhere. The bitterness intensified the sweetness. Against this background of being totally wrong, it appeared totally genuine and right. I think the director and actors with great skill achieved this. I think they genuinely believed in love, even against the backdrop of an indifferent universe.

A Filipino film about gay lovers whose different personalities, worlds and classes may be taking their friendship right off the rails. Ambivalence, vulnerability, passion. and love. The seemingly unbridgeable gap between lovers in a gay-unfriendly, class-stratified culture.

A lyrical, beautiful film. The boys are authentic, intense and passionate in making love, in conversation and in arguing. The slow dancing underneath the chandelier was so sweet. I did not like the ending but then I wouldn't.

There are many things that this film does extremely well. The pacing of the film is extremely individual, moving at a painfully slow pace to bring out the internal struggles of the lovers. The cinematography is very smart as well, contrasting expansively beautiful shots of nature with claustrophobic vignettes of JP and William, as well as showcasing their differences and idiosyncrasies. The score also amplifies the beauty and intimacy of the piece very well, though the (I presume original) song that emerges just after the halfway point comes off as forced and phoned-in. Major kudos to the two actors that hold their own through out the entirety of this marathon of a film. Despite being just over an hour, the combined effects of the film give it the feeling of multiple hours. I was especially impressed with Coco Martin's acting throughout, to the point that he may have overshadowed the more held back manner of his partner. All in all, an impressive film overall, especially in regards to form and content.

great scenery buy slow dialogue

boring and I didn't like the acting.

A romantic story that has its problems with morals and realistically views and it was a nice story of just bonding.
