Absolutely silly, hilarious stuff from master of dry and/or colorful spoofing, Fred Armisen. This has become a cult favorite among us drummers, the ones in the know, that is. Fred absolutely nails some of the drumming instruction videos and the real-life characters who make them.

Although I love Portlandia, I find Fred Armisen to be one of the worst comics I've seen. Left to his own devices, his timing misses the mark by miles. He reaches for Kaufman, but falls squarely into obnoxious. It often seems more like he forgot his line and simply doesn't know how to quit. This film is case and point.

This film funny, but ceases being so about 1/10th of the way to the credits. It would have made a fine SNL skit for about 3 minutes, but 27 minutes is far too long for the schtick to hold it's humor. For half an hour, we are treated to an endless procession of Armisen's smug mug smirking at the camera as he poorly pantomimes various, decidedly unskilled drum techniques.

The film lampoons the hubris of musicians who feel themselves more technically accomplished than they are. It mimics the worst of their pedagogy as they demonstrate technique as instruction, but without the exposition to actually teach it. Instead, it's ego fueled exposition, and YouTube has an endless array of examples of this form of video.

Ironically, this film is almost a self-referential metaphor for Armisen performance itself: over-confident and self-indulgent. What makes it worse is that I know he could do better. He writes well, he can be quite funny, and he can actually play the drums. There's just little excuse for this to be the unfunny, tedious mess that it is.

Even to a musician and jazz fan familiar with the genre being mocked here, this joke went on far too long. This would be funny as a 3-5 minute video, but not for a half hour. Just mimicking a genre or performer doesn't make something funny or satire.

Will make you uncomfortable just enough to cause you to shift in your seat and laugh out of a sense of embarrassment for the characters created. Well played Armisen, you clever a-hole.

Percussion in Portlandia! Possibly only funny, interesting to drummers (I used to be one), other musicians, jazz fans, mockumentary aficionados.

would be pretty funny if fred armisen was funny

Played along to this DVD and learned a lot of great beats. Can't wait to break them out in pep band.

One trick pony that goes on too long. 'Complicated Drumming Technique' is a spoof on 90's drumming tutorials. I feel that the short picks up on just a few of the jokes that could be made, and just overdoes pretty simple gags to the point that I'm just waiting for the next scene.

Deeply inside joke. Think Spinal Tap with absolutely all the moisture wrung out... I am talking completely desiccated humor. Totally Anhydrous.

Jens provided invaluable tips. A must watch for any aspiring complicated drummers!

For drummers it's bit tedious and the end is not very amusing. Pretty disorganized. Better stuff on the web. But then again I've been playing for 50 years. I appreciate that such a video is included in Fandor , however, and admire Armison, I suppose.

So funny!

interesting ... good

It was a complicated drumming technique. Mostly instructional with a tidbit or two of comic relief by a second drummer. Not a mockumentry like Spinal Tap in my humble opiniion. Refs to James Brown and Rick James went over my head as did the advanced time signature references. This drummer thinks about patterns when he plays drums. For the movie buff my review for your assistance is that is features jazz drumming primarily. It is more of a demonstration than a lesson on how to play. Its target would be other drummers. It has plugs to sell his CD but they are very short and minimalistic. Im not qualified to judge his drumming. His drum set is "awsome" a word I use sparingly.
