This is a stone-cold classic. Lucio Fulci lets it all hang out in this Italo-zombie-sleaze-trash-splatter fest.
You get it all in this movie: seances, inexplicable fireballs, Ital-fros, blow-up sexdolls, Schlitz on tap, premature burials, suicide, maggots, worms, women vomiting their internal organs, people getting their brains plucked outta their skulls, walking dead, jumping dead, disappearing dead, fog, graveyards, psychiatry, a drill in the head, vigilantes, dubbing...and all of it to one of the greatest one-note electronic musicals soundtracks ever written.
Also, Mr. Fulci gets an A for effort in trying to pass off Savannah, GA, as rural Massachusetts. Well played, sir, well played...

One word....DRILL!!!! Classic Fulci!
Fulci's work, at its best, is like a steak eating contest in Texas. Some may vomit afterwards but the memory will stick with you... City of the Living Dead may not be a direct sequel to The Beyond but one couldn't be faulted for thinking its in the same universe. For Example, the Book of Enoch takes center stage again as a portal into gloom. Story aside, Fulci's strongpoint is his eye for haunting images. This is pure style, mood, & melody.
Liked this even better than The Beyond and thought it was one of the most disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. The stomach-turning (literally, in one scene) gore is never campy but straight out of a hellish nightmare even when it’s incredibly excessive (there’s a whirlwind of maggots, not just as a few falling from the ceiling, for example). Creepy lighting, sets full of off-putting details and the constantly moving camera keep you nervous during the ‘story’, which is just a device to getting the viewer to the next fright. Intense horror soundtrack makes you want to pull your hair out. Very scary!
It's pretty awful. The effects are gross. The voice acting is ridiculous. The ending is stupid. It's like an ugly car crash that you just gotta look, though! It's not without its B movie charms... I give it three stars just for the excellent Goblin /Suspicious inspired soundtrack
James Lewis's review pretty much says it all: This is a classic! I am not sure what I have to add, but here goes... Christopher George is my favorite George Segal impersonator, and Catriona MacColl looks like a porcelain doll in great set-pieces like the seance scene and the premature burial. The soundtrack contains in places crazy animal sounds and jungle noises that are strangely effective. The living dead don't look like Romero-style zombies to me; rather, with their pus-weeping sores, they have a voluptuous putrescence that could only originate in Catholic visions of Hell. Effing brilliant film!
For it being my first Fulci film, it definitely did not disappoint!
Fine for what it is.
great movie. watching it on live was an excellent experience
