Charade1963

  • 4.3
Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant return to work with director Stanley Donen in the stylish and serpentine CHARADE, a blend of espionage thriller and romantic comedy that is today frequently described as the best movie Alfred Hitchcock never made. Bored and rich Reggie Lampert (Audrey Hepburn) returns home from vacation to find her husband Charles murdered, her apartment cleaned out and several unseemly characters (Walter Matthau, James Coburn, George Kennedy and Ned Glass) demanding answers (and a stolen fortune) she doesn't have. Standing out from this crowd is Peter Joshua (Cary Grant) who appears to have Reggie's best interests at heart. But can anyone in this picture really be trusted? Shot on location in Paris with a sharp score by Henri Mancini, CHARADE is a rare film with few missteps (excepting, of course, Universal's omission of a copyright notice, instantly entering the film into the public domain) that has only grown in stature since its release. - Tom Fritsche

Classic spy thriller from the cold war era. Hepburn at her most elegantly beautiful but girlishly silly (and passionate). Grant at his clumsy oaf, most gentlemanly swag. Hitchcock angles and shadows built in to the technicolor. Adorable.

Fun and wonderful. It's a thriller alright but it's so charming and warm-feeling that you just can't help but enjoy it as though people aren't being murdered left and right. Now, that's largely thanks to Audrey Hepburn and her surprisingly sexually aggressive character, but the movie surrounding her is also very pleasing to the sensibilities.

Love Cary Grant, love Audrey Hepburn, love classic movies and especially love stories and love Charade.

I've always been such a fan of Audrey Hepburn's performance in Breakfast at Tiffany's and Roman Holiday that her character in this film took me a while to appreciate and understand. Also, in terms of the film as a whole, I kept thinking I loved it then something would happen in the dialogue or between characters that made me annoyed, then I'd love it again. In conclusion, this isn't a perfect film, but it's more than just fun and has so many good things going for it it's well worth sticking with to the end.

Love the movie, but on my TV, the picture quality was AWFUL, sub-VHS. Other films look wonderful on FANDOR, but not this one. Why? So, I'm buying the Blu Ray with money I could have given to FANDOR.

I enjoyed the movie. Good suspense.

Overrated movie. Only Hepburn makes it worth watching

Great older movie. Nothing better than Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn.

Loved the plot! Great suspense movie!

A classic comedy– with murders. Sadly a print that's in only fair condition.
