A Drama of the Wilderness

  • 4.0
Before they dreamed up that oversized ape, King Kong's creators filmed this magical story of a Thai family's struggle to survive the forces of nature. Shot entirely in Siam, the film tells the story of a farmer and his family who have settled on a small patch of land on the edge of the jungle. Their existence is a constant struggle against the many wild animals around them. The climactic elephant stampede is still one of the most exciting scenes in cinema history.

Amazing + wonderful Silent Era Jungle Animal Exploitation film shot on location in Thai jungle with wild animals (including a herd of elephants!) by the directors of KING KONG (1933). Great photography by Ernest B. Schoedsack, often while covered with a rifle by co-director Merian Cooper (even though he was stricken with malaria during the shoot) - if we are to believe the promotional material which sensationalized the reckless danger involved in bringing this film to the screen. The only "documentary" ever nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. This picture is must-see if you like scenes acted out by cute monkeys!!!
