When Jonny Matlock whisks away a cold war secret from under the noses of Berlin's top secret agents, his every move is followed upon his return to England. On a deserted country road he is set upon and knocked unconscious by enemy agents. His girlfriend Paula is kidnapped but her handbag is discovered at the scene of the crime by the aristocratic private eye, Duke Martin. Inside it he discovers the secret formula that the agents are searching for and tracks down her sister Paula. As Johnny grows frantic for the safe return of his girlfriend, Duke Martin plays a deadly game of double bluff with the enemy agents. This fast paced British movie features a catalogue of talented actors and stalwarts such as Michael Balfour and Freddie Mills, plus an overlooked cameo appearance from Arthur Lowe.

Breezy, rather witty and clever film starring Tom Conway, the look-alike, talk-alike brother of George Sanders and also starring a Grace Kelly knockoff named Honor Blackman; I enjoyed it and give it four stars, although Sanders and Kelly would have made it five stars.

This is the second time that I have enjoyed Tom Conway (brother of George Sanders) and Michael Balfour (sidekick Barney) as they join up to solve a complicated mystery. "Barbados Quest" features the same pair of protagonists.

We start in Germany where a dying man hands off a secret formula to be carried back to England for profit. The equation is stolen (or so it seems) and Duke and Barney are on the case. Who ultimately buys the secret, and who are the middle-men? The bulk of the film deals with these issues.

You can easily guess the ending, but it's fun to watch how clever and calm the Duke is as he ties up all the loose ends. Honor Blackman has a dual role as both Paula Grant and Paula Jackson. A witty emprise.
