BMX Bandits1983

  • 3.3
Future Academy Award®-winner Nicole Kidman made her movie debut at sixteen years old as the pouffy-haired star of this action/comedy about a cache of stolen walkie-talkies, three BMX-riding friends and the ruthless bank robbers who will pursue them through every graveyard, shopping mall, construction site and waterpark in New South Wales, Australia. It is a high-flying ride to adventure filled with wild stunts, cool BMX outfits, creepy innuendo, cheezy synth music, an obnoxious fat kid and gobs of fast-and-furious fun.

Okay, this is really a dumbass movie. It has a completely implausible plot and a fair amount of bad, unfunny comedy, and I can't pretend it's a conventionally good film. I really loved it. At first, I simply enjoyed it's fairly straightforward 80s vibe, but it really won me over with an amazing chase sequence that seems to take up a full third of the film and features some incredible stunt work. It sets out to accomplish a few really modest goals and it accomplishes them really well ... and yes, it stars a very young Nicole Kidman in her super frizzy hair days.

Of course everyone should be interested in this film because of the debut of Nichole Kidman, but I expected it to be horrible. The truth is that "BMX Bandits" is pretty incredible, in a cheesy, over-the-top, ridiculous way. The plot and acting is much more solid than expected, and the horrible soundtrack makes this a treat. I didn't expect much but was pleasantly surprised.

To say this film is 'bad' is putting it nicely. This debuted when I was 11. I used to watch it every single weekend until my parents threatened to destroy the vhs tape. So, yeah, the nostalgia is there for me. It is what it is.

This is "The French Connection" of BMX classics. And Nicole Kidman is menaced again and again. It was wonderful. And the BMX costumes.

Good Clean Fun for the Whole Family. A Feel Good 80's Flick. Charmingly Australian.

I'm surprised Nicole Kidman's BMX pals didn't nickname her, "Frizzy." "Eh, Frizzy, give us a race to the beach!" I mean this in the best way; I think Nicole Kidman is a great actress with great hair. It's just frizzy at times, which I think is really cool.

This movie is a bunch of cheesy fun. Slapstick villains, surprisingly decent stunts and chase sequences, and a cast that does a pretty good job. What more can you ask for?

This was a fun movie. My 10 year old self would have loved it back in the day.

"I am not going into a cemetery dressed as a pig!"

best movie.
