Blood of the Vampires1971

  • 3.1
This very Filipino vampire movie centers on a wealthy family cursed by you-know-what. After its patriarch suffers a mysterious attack, the wealthy Escondero clan realizes its long-dead matriarch in fact "lives" on as an undead bloodsucker chained in the basement thanks to "the power of Satan." Once her thirsty existence is revealed, various offspring fall prey to the same scourge. This lurid costume drama mixes elements of vintage Hammer horror and the era’s soap-operatic Filipino family dramas (though no Hammer feature would have dared putting actors in blackface for peasant/servant roles, as here). Also known as CURSE OF THE VAMPIRES and WHISPER TO THE WIND, BLOOD is a supernatural Grand Guignol that has more in common with the same era’s U.S. supernatural soap opera DARK SHADOWS than with the conventions of concurrent vampire cinema. The climax is horror even more Catholic than THE EXORCIST. It was among the last films made by Gerardo de Leon, one of the most important and laureled of directors from Filipino cinema’s "first golden age." Landing more on the commercial rather than prestigious end of his projects, it nonetheless sports his flair for heavy drama and vivid atmospherics. Unfortunately, BLOOD OF THE VAMPIRES is presently only available with an English-dubbed dialogue track. Dubbing is generally avoided whenever possible (though not an option in this particular instance). - Dennis Harvey

Absolutely loved this film. Not to be missed if your a fan of the Gothic horror films of the 60s and 70s. This one has all the classic horror trappings: vampires, foggy graveyards, dungeons, ect.... Definetly in the spirit of the movies of Paul Naschy and the Hammer films. And a tremendous ending sequence that rivals any horror classic. Truly enjoyed this one, 5 stars.
