Black Like Me1964

  • 3.7
Based on the landmark memoir by John Howard Griffin, BLACK LIKE ME stars James Whitmore as Griffin, who medically altered his pigment and, with the help of a sunlamp, reinvented himself as an itinerant black writer navigating his way through Mississippi and Alabama. Along the way he experienced firsthand both crushing racism and the incredible life force of the Afro-American communities.

Having read both the original text and the updated edition, the license that the film takes with the actual events is disappointing. The fact that in real life, Griffin was a psychiatrist who considered himself liberal and set out to prove that the south did NOT have a race problem adds poignancy to the story. Changing the character to a writer who sets out simply to experience life in the south as a black man is pure '60s white liberalism.

it was interesting to see that someone really cared how the Negro felt and was wiling to go to such lengths to make others aware of the strife and struggle that they endured.
