RCA produced BLACK AND TAN to showcase its Photophone sound system. Director Dudley Murphy collaborated with Fernand Leger on BALLET MECANIQUE in 1924 and seasons this film with avant-garde sequences while also telling a story. The late Karl Emil Knudsen, well-known Danish producer of jazz records, purchased the original negative from Dudley Murphy and supplied the print from which this transfer was made.

There is SO MUCH to marvel at here. Here is the spirit and energy of the Harlem Renaissance at it's apex; hot jazz captured on film at the dawn of the sound age, composed by a 30 year-old Duke Elliington. The entrancing presence of pioneering actress and dancer Fredi Washington (on one of her first dance gigs, she was hired by none other than Josephene Baker!). "Black and Tan" is an amazing piece of American history captured on film, and most of all, IT SWINGS!

Black musicians in the spotlight, an interracial relationship, stunning & racy dancers' costumes, and a requiem of choral jazz. Underestimate the 1920s at your peril.

visually and emotionally very strong

Morbid!
