Big Sur1966

The Ladies

  • 3.5
In describing the process of BIG SUR, artist Lawrence Jordan writes, "As with RODIA-ESTUDIANTINA only one shot, which probably was the result of lapse in concentration, was deleted from the original camera roll. This film was intended to extend my experiments with the 'in-camera' film, and is probably one of the most successful. Against the coastline of the Big Sur country the camera catches swiftly shifting fragments of the women at the baths, playing the guitar, cutting their hair, sleeping. In this case I attempted to use the camera movement to slightly smear the images onto the film emulsion in a manner parallel with the use of broad different medium from music or painting, I have always been interested in the dynamic parallels that existed once photography in its still form was released into time (the parallel with music) and into motion (the parallel with the brush stroke)."

Dude, was this a bad ass music video? I loved how California (I assume it is) is romanticized! Those backwards guitars have got my number.

More photographic than painterly, in that the colors, tones, and forms reference the techniques and technology of photography of the 70s as much as the music. It is a good portrait comprised of a montage of different figures, nude and dressed, mature and young, mostly women. A moment in time.

Don't usually like short ephemera type stuff, but one of the most important experiences of my life took place at Big Sur about 50 years after this film. So I had to see what it was.

Beautiful naked woman plus waves crashing against the cliffs of big sur, in time with one of the coolest parts of one of the best Beatles songs.

I can't give it more than 3, but I actually enjoyed this. When i saw the length as it was loading I figured I wouldn't. I'm sure if it was a naked man at the beginning I wouldn't have stayed for the crashing waves...

This film did interestingly pop up by synchronicity as I was paging thru the roku and my wife and I were talking about our dream of moving to California. Thank you, Geo Harrison and Naked Lady and Gaia, for the message
