A mesmerizing new masterwork from the director of the critically-acclaimed THE DEATH OF MR. LAZARESCU, AURORA is a murder mystery turned on its head, where the mystery's not the culprit but the motive. Inside a non-descript apartment kitchen, a man and a woman discuss the inconsistencies in "Red Riding Hood," their voices hushed, mindful of waking the little girl sleeping in the next room. Behind a line of abandoned trailers, on the outskirts of Bucharest, the same man waits for something or someone to arrive. At a metallurgical factory, he collects two hand-made firing pins secretly prepared by a coworker. The man's name is Viorel. He is forty-two years old, divorced, a father of two young girls. Today he will carry out a plan that will bring order to his world.

Definitely worth watching. Not much of a mystery, really. More of an extended painting of a man turned murderer in the final moments before he walks to the gallows that he himself has constructed. Which is either interesting, or it is not.

It was a tough movie to understand at times for me. And lots of questions remain!

Though I was shocked to discover it was about 3 hours- did not feel that long. Wonderful acting from everyone, just had a problem with the plot. Bothers me that I don't now why he was the way he was. We really learned very little about him other than his crimes!

excellent film_probably 4+_it's really slow & i like that_but this guy's really nuts & when he got sort of creepy i sort of got nervous_which is good i guess_why he did what he did i have no idea but that's not really important_i like the way he moves so careful so slow so thought out_except for a few scenes when i thought he was losing it_WTF!

so slow...I couldn't wait for story

Yes, I loved it, but am not sure why, except that it tightly holds the viewer in its strange grip ---- as the Fandor review says, it is mesmerizing, even while nothing much is happening on screen, which is most of the time. Mostly, one struggles to put the pieces together --- what is this guy's actual relation to other people and what are his goals? --- until at last it becomes clear that he is a psychopath methodically bent on murder. The climactic police station scene brings it altogether in that inimitable tragi - comic style for which Piui gained notice in The Death of Mr Lazeruscu. His fine acting abilities displayed in Aurora demonstrates his remarkable range of talents.
