There are so many holocaust films, many based on true stories, and this offering from Louis Malles is no less poignant and devastating than many others. It is always refreshing to see a film from the point of view of a child, and the young Raphael Fejto as the clandestine Kippelstein, comes across as such a brave and noble youth it is all the more heart-wrenching to watch through to the film's inevitable ending.
Near perfect.
haven't seen it in years but i love this film
I first saw this on the big screen when it was first released and I love it more every time I see it. Louis Malle was wonderful. The only film he ever made that I cannot recommend is "damage." I walked out of the theater shaking my head sadly and wondering what went wrong on that one.
It's really hard to achieve subtleness in dramas about war. For a director, creating a mood where the audience actually feels threatened without shooting a single bullet, it's kind of a holy grail.
This approach requires a lot of attention to details in dialogue and iconographic symbols. It's a very different approach from Polanski's gritty vision of world war II, one might say it takes a different kind of sensibility to achieve what Malle did in this film. As a director, you need to expose treason as something much more repulsive than an execution... As a person, you have to feel sorry for the injustice of war, from a position where you feel unreachable.
Classic.
Beautifully done.
I love this movie!
What I love about Fandor is that I can find movies that used to only be shown in art houses,I found "the connection ",here,as well as "black Orpheus ",and this gem.
Thank you
Excellent and extremely memorable.
