...and the Pursuit of Happiness1986

In 1986, Louis Malle, himself a transplant to the United States, set out to investigate the ever-widening range of immigrant experience in America. Interviewing a variety of newcomers (from teachers to astronauts to doctors) in middle- and working-class communities from coast to coast, Malle paints a generous, humane portrait of their individual struggles in an increasingly polyglot nation.

Despite the passage of 30 years since this film was released, ...And The Pursuit of Happiness remains a pertinent inquiry into the immigrant experience in the United States. What does it take to adjust to a new culture, language, and, in some cases, climate? One of the interviewees talked about forgetting the past. Other interviewees discussed their attempts to pass on cultural and religious traditions to children growing up in a completely different environment than their parents. The film certainly does not leave the impression that being an immigrant is an easy experience.
