  • 4.0
An important film in the history of American gay filmmaking, A VERY NATURAL THING is considered the first feature film on the gay experience made by an out-of-the-closet gay man to receive commercial distribution. The simple but insightful story involves a 26-year-old gay man, Jason, who leaves the priesthood and moves to New York City in the hopes of finding a meaningful gay relationship. Now a school teacher, he soon falls in love with a handsome young advertising executive, David. Together they discover passion and romance while learning to respect and love each other.

I actually found "A Very Natural Thing", circa 1974 to be insightful and honest. Very rarely do they make a honest film these days. I am so thankful to have witnessed such an astonishing motion picture. The screenplay, the director, the cast, all of the film crew were brave to do this in 1974.

A really well-made period piece about gay men trying to figure out relationships and domesticity and sexuality in the 70s. Remarkable, how well-made and unapologetic this film is, when you think about it in historical perspective.

A very beautiful movie. A must see for everyone interested in knowing some of the relationship issues of homosexual love.

It was a nice romance movie, but with a twist: the true love that Mark sought was not the one he started out with but being the romantic he was he could not see beyond the rose colored glasses he was wearing. It was only having time to reflect on what is meaningful in life and what is unrealistic at the same time. The fact he finally found the person who epitomize the values he held true and the commitment to a relationship based on a mutual definition of what a relationship means to each. It could have been maudlin in the final 'act' but rose above that and concluded on a note of hope!

This is an excellent look at relationships (in this case gay) and the importance of being together because they Want and Need to be, vs immediately moving in together and sharing an address! Everyone needs some time to themselves and to remain an individual. That is difficult under the same roof as a "couple." I think this film is a very realistic look at sex & love & the need to bond with another person. I have lived much of this film's plot and it is quite true.

An absolutely beautiful movie; the acting, the music, the story. Very realistic regarding the present, but still full of hope for the future. Deeply touching, highly recommend it.

This is an excellent film. When the film was created I was a child. Watching the film now makes me aware of the emancipatory potential of this era which is gone. There is no progress in the society but the individual engagement and search for consciousness, which is touchable in this film, gives some comfort and encouragement to go on and search for the real life.

Quickly keys you in to the sensibility of homosexual love and culture 40 years ago. The narrative is compelling and compassionate. The film renders many layers of romance, friendship, and a glance at the casual sex scene at that time in the bathhouses and before HIV-AIDS.

I enjoyed the film..

Good plot which moved along... like this one...

This is a remarkable film, remembering that this work came out in 1974, when the American Psychiatric Association had just 'declassified' homosexuality as a mental illness but, with the exception of a couple of states, gay sex was legally still crime. Still, the 1970s was a 'belle époque' for gays before the terrible outbreak of AIDS. This film is a beautiful, and honest story, of gay relationships. It is not to be missed.

true vision of freedom thought and transitional road to who one thinks they are at but are not.

Don't know if I loved it, but I did relate to it.

wonderful document of the time. Bell Bottom pants ! good story and the characters are well acted.

THIS MOVIE I TRULY ENJOYED. HIS RELATIONSHIP WITH MARK THOUGH ROMANTIC, I THINK THEY BOTH WANTED TO DIFFERENT THINGS. MARK WANTED TO BE WITH HIM BUT AT THE SAME TIME STILL HAVE THE FREEDOM TO ROAM IF HE WANTED TO. BOTTOM LINE HE WANTED AN OPENED RELARIONSHIP (HAVE HIS CAKE AND EAT IT TOO) WHERE AS JASON WANTED A MORE COMITTED RELATIONSHIP. AFTER COMING OUT OF A RELATIONSHIP THAT BROKE HIS HEART THE PRINCIPLE CHARACTER WANTED A DIFFERENT TYPE OF COMITTED RELATIONSHIP, WHERE THEY COULD STAY TOGETHER FOR AS LONG AS THEY WANTED TO BE TOGETHER NOT NECESSARILY LIVE TOGETHER, HE DIDN'T WANT IT TO DEVELOPE INTO A RELATIONSHIP WHERE THEY HAD TO STAY TOGETHER IF THEY LIVED TOGETHER. I UNDERSTOOD AND AGREED WITH THE POSITION HE TOOK, TO KEEP THE RELATIONSHIP TANGLE FREE, I THINK WAS A GOOID ONE . THE ACTING WAS GOOD ALSO.

Truthful representation of how complex our social scene can be!

I loved this film and the themes in it. Growing up in those days as a teenager, I felt much like the character of David and it was a painful journey through relationships with differing expectations. I thought this film was well done and reflected the times and the growing pains of the Gay Liberation movement. I believe that our history is important for the new generations of gays and lesbians to know "from whence they came". A well done film.

i liked it alot

Great pic one of the best I have seen in a while.

it was a good movie. i like it.

A look back at 1973-74 and how relationships happened at the very beginning of the fight for gay and lesbian rights.
