Su-mi and Su-yeon return home after an extended hospital stay. Things have not been the same since their mother passed away. Their return is welcomed by their stepmother Eun-joo. Su-mi, the older and stronger of the two, isn’t afraid to speak her mind, while Su-yeon is more timid and wary of their stepmother and looks to Su-mi for help. Continually picked on and harassed by their stepmother, the two have no choice but to endure the relationship for their father’s sake. Su-mi promises Su-yeon that she will never let their stepmother beat them again. Unexplainable things start to occur at the house. Could it be their stepmother trying to torment them, or is a more sinister supernatural force at work?

"A triumph of stylish, darkly absurdist horror that even manages to strike a chord of Shakespearean tragedy—and evokes a sense of wonder anew at all the terrible things people do to themselves and each other." - Kevin Thomas, L.A. Times

This 110 minute mind f**k of eerie suspense, shocks and horror takes its time to develop. Even after fifty minutes, I wasn’t sure what this was really ‘about’ (Ghosts? Madness? Dark family secrets? Revenge? Dreams?), but I didn’t care, because it was such well-told horror that draws your complete attention. Things aren’t explained or make any sense until the very end. Really enjoyed this and rewatched several scenes.

At times the film score seemed off, which may be a cultural difference but it gave a few scenes, particularly in the beginning of the film a bit of a campy, melodramatic feel. At times the film may be confusing, but it does wonders in creating a truly eerie atmosphere and wraps together in the end nicely. I had seen the movie years ago and remembered enjoying it but couldn't remember much of it, now I'm afraid some of it is branded in my mind for good. That scene on the bed, yikes.

A truly affective suspense/horror film that is superbly acted and scripted to give you the chills(which it does)! An evocative and minimalist score supports the mystery of this twisted family drama which is captured with brutal honesty by the cinematography.

This carefully orchestrated movie manages to lift itself above conventional ideas of horror. It is clever, disorienting and memorable.

Where to even begin ? For starters you will need to watch this film twice to really understand exactly what is going on. The director/writer knows how to use the often beaten down phrase 'plot twist' here. I really don't like korean horror films, this is thee exception. Going into this cold is the best way. Not reading the synopsis or anything. Amazing is all I can say.

Amazing film!

"Sorry. This film is not currently available." Then don't advertise it.

Visually rich and at times, suspenseful, this tale was at times a bit melodramatic and convoluted. Nonetheless, a very nice way to spend a rainy afternoon. Based on the Korean fairytale Rose Flower, Red Lotus.

10/10. great stuff. u rock never change hags
