One of Japanese cinema's supreme emulations of American noir, Takashi Nomura's A COLT IS MY PASSPORT is a down-and-dirty but gorgeously photographed yakuza film starring Joe Shishido as a hard-boiled hit man caught between rival gangs. Featuring an incredible, spaghetti-western-style soundtrack and brimming with formal experimentation, this is Nikkatsu at its finest.

Joe Shishido is one of the quintessential screen tough guys of the 1960’s, right up there with Sean Connery and Lee Marvin. He is at his coolest in this slick yet unpretentious crime thriller. You can see the influence of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns here, not just in the music, but in the camerawork: extreme close-ups of the character’s faces, the wide shots in the final showdown. This is a diamond among the Yakuza films made by Nikkatsu studios.

A really sleek piece of cinema. Joe Shishido is superb, and oozes cool throughout the entire film. Extremely entertaining throughout, and reminiscent of Leone's work.
