A Band Called Death2012

  • 4.2
Punk before punk existed, three teenage brothers in the early '70s formed a band in their spare bedroom, began playing a few local gigs and even pressed a single in the hopes of getting signed. But this was the era of Motown and emerging disco. Record companies found Death's music, and band name, too intimidating, and the group were never given a fair shot, disbanding before they even completed one album. Equal parts electrifying rockumentary and epic family love story, A BAND CALLED DEATH chronicles the incredible fairy-tale journey of what happened almost three decades later, when a dusty 1974 demo tape made its way out of the attic and found an audience several generations younger. Playing music impossibly ahead of its time, Death is now being credited as the first black punk band (hell…the first punk band!), and are finally receiving their long overdue recognition as true rock pioneers.

"A Band Called Death" is a pretty awesome story. Three brothers start a band with their own vision, is misunderstood, fall into obscurity, becomes a collectible, and then has a resurgence. The greatest thing about Death is that you really start to like the guys, that even though they were not successful, they were still funny, happy and filled with life. This is one of those stories that I can watch over and over because it is a very entertaining phoenix story. One of my favorites in a long time.

Extremely moving. The incredible talent of these brothers. They deserved immense recognition, and still do. I'm planning on buying their albums. Thanks to Fandor for alerting me to them.

Love this family/Love this film.

very inspirational. I loved it.

A Band Called Death is a portrait of both late born success and family. The film details the bond of the Hackney family through several generations and how that was simultaneously strengthened and corroded through rock music. There's a feeling band could have been successful if not for their stubbornness regarding their name especially given their later success. Still the tunes are fantastic and there's a joy in this band actually being discovered.

Buying a few albums to share with all my friends. Stunning discovery.

Death LIVES!
