Joe Biel

Joe Biel (born 1966 or 1978, conflicting accounts) is an American award-winning filmmaker, author, zinester, journalist, artist, illustrator, teacher, and publisher. He is the founder of Microcosm Publishing, Cantankerous Titles, and co-founder of The Portland Zine Symposium. Among other filmmaking awards, in 2007, Expozine gave his zine Bipedal, By Pedal the "Best English Zine Award". His work has shone in the Greg Kucera gallery, San Jose Art Museum, James Gray, Kuckei + Kuckei, Rosenthal Gallery, and around the world. Biel was born in Pittsburgh, PA and spent his early years back-and-forth between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. When he was five years old, his father suffered from his first stroke, crippling him for life and severely impairing his speech, motor function, and brain activity. His mother, who had been an English teacher before he was born, supported the family on social security and took care of his father. When Biel was fifteen years old he developed a strong interest in punk rock and played in numerous punk bands in his teens and early twenties.
