We’re hosting a no holds barred web-wide Q&A with the ultimate DIY filmmaker, Preston Miller, and YOU are the interviewer. Last week we invited you to ask Preston anything that’s on your mind, like questions on how best to get your film made, funding advice or his experiences making his latest film God’s Land (premiered on Fandor on 10/28).

    What was the response of the locals when you were shooting on location in Long Island? Did anyone get mad? Did anyone get serendipitously cast in the film?

    First, on God’s Land, why did you feel, “I must make *THIS* movie” ?

    Second, Ted Hope said, “A TRULY FREE FILM CULTURE recognizes film as a dialogue and recognizes that a dialogue requires a community.” What does that “dialogue” mean to you as a filmmaker? How does a literal dialogue, like this conversation with the Fandor community, impact your thinking and your work?

    i’m looking for a documentarian with funding sources.. here’s the story: 24 years ago, i went to lebowa, south africa, as a volunteer & worked with a group of women. we were 90 miles from the nearest town .. in the course of my time there, I made very close connectioons with the tribe (bapedi). we ‘integrated’ restuarants, hotels, beaches… i was forced to leave, in very unpleasant circumstances. the women and i struggled to stay in contact but eventually lost track …
    just 2 weeks ago, through the miracle of facebook (!), we found each other again … of course, i want to go back and they want me to come back .. if only for a visit..
    i think that it’s a story worth telling .. the power of love, the power of technology …
    do you have any pointers for me? yes, i am now retired, a little old lady .. but spirit is strong… thanks for your time..

    Working on a tight budget and tight schedule how do you feel about the compromises made in capturing the story? I imagine it must be hard, 25 shooting days with 10 of those as pickup. Did you get everything you need and how do you feel about what came together in the end? I imagine there is a balance to being creatively satisfied and finishing a piece.

    Hi my question is regarding funding for indie films… I`m wanting to make a film and it will be my first time directing something that is with a crew of more than 15 and actual actors…how do I convince people to give me money to make it? It is a powerful story based on my experience with ballroom dance, but what can I do to sell it to them without giving them this whole lecture on why they should? What did you find to be helpful when you were wanting to find ways to fund your film?

    At what point in the process did you decide to cast film critics (such as Glenn Kenny and Kevin Lee) in secondary roles? Was it always your intention for find a part for Trey Albright (of JONES) as well?
