THIS EXISTENCE IS MATERIAL weaves together two tales: one of an unlikely friendship between an elderly male writer and a young female filmmaker; the other of a poet who flies to Rome to incite an uprising against fascism in the 1930s. THIS EXISTENCE... is a counter-archive of the past in which public images and private lives, the Old World and the New, collide. The film reflects on how boundaries between genders and generations are shaped by vision and language, by technology and warfare.

A visual poem. A rather obtuse yet poignant tribute to a poet met by the filmmaker at the end of his life. Old stock film footage symbolizes the past slowly being lost to those to come.
