After skipping out on an unpaid hotel bill, a busload of curvaceous showgirls is forced off the road by a thunderstorm. They rely on the hospitality of a nearby castle, where reclusive Count Kernassy nearly orders them away until he sees Vera, a leggy dancer who is a dead ringer for his beautiful ancestor Margherita! Unfortunately, Vera is also attracted to the Count's two-hundred year old bloodthirsty ancestor, who is a dead ringer for his descendant! Made in 1960, Piero Regnoli's THE PLAYGIRLS AND THE VAMPIRE was one of the earliest Italian horror films. More importantly, it was one of the first horror films from any country to mix Gothic horror and explicit eroticism. Horror films may have been a favorite with young audiences in America, but in European countries the genre was always restricted to adult viewing. In the late 1950s British fight films like JACK THE RIPPER, THE HELLFIRE CLUB and MANIA were released in France containing nude scenes shot exclusively for their continental release.
