More complex than many of the other shorts Stan Laurel made before partnering with Oliver Hardy, SMITHY concerns a recently discharged infantryman. Laurel’s veteran finds a job at a construction site, a setting full of slapstick opportunities. To the misfortune of the workers below, the foreman stations Smithy on the roof. A clerical mix-up puts the klutz in charge of the construction project for a week. Enough time to engineer a grand fiasco!
