Making an American Citizen
Directed by: Alice Guy
year: 1912 16 minutes
Pioneering director Alice Guy-Blanché produced this short only a few years after she herself immigrated to the United States from France. Gender relations are at the center of her fable of assimilation. A Russian couple come off the boat in native dress and, with the Statue of Liberty still in sight, the brute husband begins beating his wife for her slowness. A kind stranger intervenes, the first of many. As melodramatics gradually empower the wife and curb her husband, Guy demonstrates a strong iconic grasp for a variety of American settings.
