In Norway during the 1800s, a little girl named Dina accidentally causes the dramatic death of her mother. Overcome with grief, her father refuses to raise her, leaving her in the care of the household servants. Her only friend is the stable boy, Tomas. Dina (Maria Bonnevie) grows up wild and unmanageable. In her teenage years, she is afforded a musical tutor and she develops a crush on him but it seems everything she cares for accidentally dies. When a wealthy port owner Jacob (Gerard Depardieu), more than twice her age and a recent widower, asks for her hand, Dina's fortune changes quickly. Soon she applies her intellect and strong will to govern the port operations with her husband. Jacob's two sons have very different views on Dina and realize her youth leaves them powerless in their father's empire. Soon after, her childhood friend Tomas (Christopher Eccleston) reappears in her life. I AM DINA is an epic tale of fate and fortune, featuring great performances by an all star cast against the stunning background of the Norwegian fjords.

The movie is quite pretentious. The character of Dina does'nt make sense.
