Those with high moral fiber need not apply. For herein lies the debauched synthetic dress of a sexually liberated Japan. Watch with wide eyes as it unfurls its lust and typing paper. And when it's done, be sure to have a cigarette handy to toast the vivid glow of a shared moment, now fading. Those with a high moral fiber, and a distaste for dark fantasies, need not apply.
As a recent inductee into the world of Japanophilia, I've been eating up their classic comics, literature, and films with wild abandon. One thing that's really struck me as odd is their seeming nonchalance toward rape. In the works of Osamu Tezuka and Susumu Katsumata, characters rape and are raped right and left without any visible consequences, and it's visible here too. I'm not a legalistic person needless to say, but even I find this tendency more than a bit disturbing. All that aside, this is a surprisingly good film, with even some moments of real visual poetry - specifically the brilliant chick scene.
