CHRIS AND DON: A LOVE STORY is the true-life story of the passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose "Berlin Stories" was the basis for all incarnations of the much-beloved CABARET) and American portrait painter Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. From Isherwood’s Kit-Kat-Club years in Weimar-era Germany (the inspiration for his most famous work) to the couple’s first meeting on the sun-kissed beaches of 1950s Malibu, their against-all-odds saga is brought to dazzling life by a treasure trove of multimedia. Bachardy’s contemporary reminiscences (in the Santa Monica home he shared with Isherwood until his death in 1986) artfully interact with archival footage, rare home movies (with glimpses of glitterati pals W.H. Auden, Igor Stravinsky and Tennessee Williams), reenactments and, most sweetly, whimsical animated sequences based on the cat-and-horse cartoons the pair used in their personal correspondence. With Isherwood’s status as an out-and-proud gay maverick and Bachardy’s eventual artistic triumph away from the considerable shadow of his life partner, CHRIS AND DON: A LOVE STORY is above all a joyful celebration of a most extraordinary couple.

Life-Affirming documentary of a unique and unusual long term relationship between the much older celebrity and mentor and his protege. Wonderful and sweet in a non-sentimental manner, this film shows the importance of real love that transcends prejudice, stereotypes and time.
There is a lot of similarities in our life with the story of Chris & Don - - -

I ENJOYED THIS STORY .I FIND IT RATHER SAD THAT IN SOCIETY AS I SEE IT TODAY WE GRASP ON TO THE LIFE OF BEING STRAIGHT , WITH ALL THE TRADITIONS OF BEING GAY , YET CLINGING ON TO THE VALUES OF THE STRAIGHT SOCIETY . THESE TWO LOVED ONE ANOTHER SO DEEPLY . IN THE END NO MATTER HOW DEEP A RELATIONSHIP GOES SUCH AS CHRIS AND DON'S DID . IN THE END YOU LIVE ALONE AFTER THE DEATH OF A MATE YOU SHARED A WONDERFUL LIFE WITH . NOT MANY OF US CAN FIND THAT PERFECT RELATIONSHIP, NO MATTER HOW MANY FLAWS IT MAY HAVE , TO MAKE IT WORK NO MATTER WHAT. I FEEL DON WAS LOOKING FOR A FATHER FIGURE WHO ALSO COULD BE A UNDERSTANDING LOVER. HAVING THE BACK GROUND THAT CHRIS HAD , HE SHAPED AND MOLDED DON INTO A MAN OF CLASS IN A SOCIETY MANY DO NOT COME TO FIND . THE STORY LINE WAS BEAUTIFUL, HAPPY IN MANY WAYS , AND YOU COULD STILL SEE THE SADNESS AFTER DON LOST CHRIS , WHAT YOU SEE IS THAT DON KEPT GOING ON . HIS PAINTINGS WILL BE A FORTUNE TO THOSE WHO GET TO HAVE THEM THROUGH AUCTIONS , WE SOMETIMES FIND A SOUL MATE AND LIVE A BEAUTIFUL LIFE . I WISH MANY OF THE YOUNGER PEOPLE WHO COME IN AND OUT OF RELATIONSHIPS WOULD JUST GIVE JUST ONE RELATIONSHIP A TRY A LIFE TIME . I KNOW IN MY LIFE I TRIED , BUT WHEN A RELATIONSHIP TURNS BITTER THEN YOU FIND YOUR ALONE . NO OTHER PERSON CAN FILL THE VOID .. THIS HOWEVER IS NOT ABOUT ME I APOLOGIZE FOR WRITING THAT. It was very touching, romantic and true love life between the love of a older guy and young guy.
Like my own experience! I was the young guy and my partner of 9 years he passed way two years ago, he was 84 years old. I have Hispanic background and he was American! We have to deal with the age difference and cultural,and language difference also. But our love conquer all!! And we share our life and we live happily many years! I missed him so much! And this movie make me cry!
