Amanda Peet's film debut (as well as the earliest non-television "principal performer" roles for Neil Patrick Harris and Matthew Lillard).

Set in the future, the film focuses on Arnold Mosk (Neil Patrick Harris), a high school student caught abusing drugs. When he's put in a controversial isolation program nicknamed the "Animal Room," his life is threatened. It's a classroom where no rules apply. Arnold is terrorized by a gang leader, Doug Van Housen (Matthew Lillard). When Arnold's childhood friend, Gary, a popular school athlete, tries to save him, all involved are caught in a cycle of violence. In the annals of genre film mayhem, ANIMAL ROOM uses its CLOCKWORK ORANGE-ish inspiration to occasionally inspired ends.

This is one of those films that is more about what the filmmaker is trying to say instead of what the viewer is anticipated to perceive. It's very self conscious. The best modern film of this genre that comes to mind is River's Edge. Try that instead for a more realistic story of youth gone amok. Don't let the fact that Keanu Reeves stars hold you back!

This film expects the viewer to believe that in the very near future high school kids can roam the hood raping housewives and beating up whom ever they please with no police action. Even in school bullies assault weaker students with out repercussions or police.. You must suspend all logical reality to like this film..Also, the casting choices are pretty lame, the bullies are cute and well dressed with no kids of color to be found anywhere.Perhaps the film takes place in an alternative universe....1 star
