Every frame of A TRIP TO THE MOON is brimming with invention. A charming, delightful film, and the forerunner to all modern day science fiction and fantasy film. The iconic "man in the moon" with the rocket in his eye is a testament to the enduring impact of Melies "A Trip to the Moon." A must-see film for anyone interested in filmmaking, and for fans of sci-fi and fantasy films.
Before the Matrix, before Star Wars, before Star Trek, before 2001 A Space Odissey...There was "A trip to the Moon". There wouldn´t be any of the above without this 1902 seminal, groundbreaking masterpiece, which also happens to be really entertaining and, (Why not say it?), incredibly fun to watch. So, start the count down, fasten your seat belts and soar to the stars with this amazing motion picture, and let Georges Meliés... "Take you to the moon".

I had seen part of this wonderful movie in the Spielberg movie, "Hugo" and loved it and the story of George Melies.
A 1902, classic with cutting edge special effects...well, for 1902. Fantastic short film about a trip to the moon and the adventures the individuals have on the moon. The viewer has to remember that during this time, nobody knew for sure what was on the moon. A trip to the moon was still many years away so everything was speculation based on telescopes of the time.
This is wonderfully whimsical and imaginative= Malies is a wonderful film maker!

Besides the historical and artistic significance, this is a very entertaining and beautiful short film.
Engaging, surprising, and well deserving of its status as a classic. Méliès' mad-scientist enthusiasm for both the subject and the tricks of his trade is evident throughout the entire film. There is abundant creativity in the visual detail and in the turns of the plot. "Trip to the Moon" does seem naive to an era that has actually been to the moon, and made films about going much farther, but as a film it continues to set a standard.
At that time, they did'nt have the technology though,but had the idea,before those s.f. movies, we had this one, well done.
Melies is as magical as the film histories say he is. This is a very theatrical film, as the majority of film syntax as we know it had not been invented yet. I really enjoyed "A Trip to the Moon."
An essential film! And who did the sound design for this version? It is superb, and adds so much.
While this is slow paced for today's audiences, especially the beginning, I'd say it's worth sticking with it longer than you think. You'll be rewarded with amazing changes of scenery, costumes, concepts, and acting styles. Beautiful, enlivening, great music, hats, shapes, movements.
I remember seeing this film when I was a young kid and instead of thinking it was hokey, in light of the Star Wars special effects of the day, I was immediately entranced. I can see where so many budding filmmakers would see A Trip to the Moon and say to themselves, "I can do that."
