FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

What is Fandor?

Fandor is an online destination for watching amazing independent films from all over the world. Click here to learn more about us.

Why isn't it free to watch movies?

As film fans, we understand that without filmmakers, there would be no films. We believe in supporting the community that brings us great films. It's only fair. Half of your subscription fee goes to the people who provide us with films. This means that for every $2 we take in we pay $1 to filmmakers or distributors, depending on who owns the rights.

However, we do offer a two week free trial to new subscribers. And yes, we still pay the filmmakers for films watched during your free trial.

Can I watch films outside the U.S.?

In two words, not yet. For now, our agreements with filmmakers and distributors only allow us to stream films in the United States. Eventually, we'd love to be available worldwide, but at the moment, we're solely in the USA.

Can I watch films in HD?

We believe it's important to find the best available source materials and present them in the highest quality possible. Our movie players use a special feature called "dynamic streaming" to provide you with the best film quality possible. If an HD stream of a film is available and you have a good connection, you'll see the film in HD. If for some reason watching in HD would disrupt your viewing, the player chooses a more stable resolution. You can find many High Definition movies here.

Can I watch films on my phone or TV?

Yes. Follow the links below to learn how you can watch movies on your iPad, iPhone or Roku. We are always working on supporting new devices so other options will be coming soon. If there's a device you wish we supported, feel free to write us at or post your suggestion to our community forum here.

Can I watch Fandor on my TV without external devices?

You sure can. All you'll need to do is connect your computer to your TV with a VGA or HDMI cable.

I'm not getting subtitles on my Apple TV.

If you are using AirPlay to stream movies from your iPhone or iPad to your Apple TV then you will need to turn on mirroring. The application should automatically set this but if it does not you can turn it on by following the instructions here.

Fandor says I may have a network issue. Now what?

Okay, you might have to put on your IT hat for this.

To stream Fandor movies using a web browser, you need port 1935 to be open. Sometimes this port is closed due to security/antivirus software or corporate firewalls. You or your network administrator can open port 1935 in the router or security software.

If you get stuck at any point, don't worry, help is just an email away at support@fandor.com.

Why can't I 'Like' a film?

If the Facebook like or recommend button is not working it could be due to third party cookies being blocked. Go to settings, content settings and deselect the checkbox to block third party cookies.

Why does the film quality vary?

Due to the wide range of production formats, different films play with varying quality. We strive to make the viewing experience as flawless as possible.

Do you edit or censor any of the films?

No, we do not cut or alter our films in any way. In some instances, there are several versions of a film. We show the complete films as licensed from the filmmaker or partner.

I'm looking for a specific film and can't find it. Why?

From the millions of films in existence, Fandor handpicks a wide range of essential, hard-to-find gems. While we don't have everything, our curatorial team is constantly traveling the world to expand our library. If there's a film you believe belongs here, please let us know at content@fandor.com. And, be sure to check out our Explore page to find out all of the ways you can discover films. We're sure you'll find something you'll love.

How do you choose the "Related Films" on the film pages?

Films with similar genres and filmmakers appear in "Related Films." Sometimes additional data also affects which films appear (such as how much the film has been watched and reviewed and whether it has related articles).

Where can I find out more about the films and filmmakers?

For reviews and criticism, check out "Related Articles" on each film page, which displays articles from Keyframe, our digital magazine. For cast and crew details and full director filmographies you can find lots of resources online including imdb.com.

How do I submit a film to Fandor?

We love discovering great films to add to our site. If you've made a film that you think belongs here, visit our submission page for more information.

Why didn't the average rating show up when I rated a film?

A film's rating appears only after it gets a certain number of user ratings. If you were one of the first people to rate a film, an average rating may not be visible. As more people rate the film, your rating will be factored in the overall rating.

What is the Fandor Channel?

This is like the ultimate, non-stop mix tape of films. Our curators have programmed a continuous selection of films that play all day, every single of the year. Click here to learn more and start watching.
